As soon as I heard about Wonderush, I knew we'd get along. In fact, with a motto of 'Live More Awesome', if Wonderush was a person I reckon we'd probably be soulmates. Sassy, fun-hunting soulmates.

The concept of the site is that, for a monthly fee of a very inexpensive £29 a month (PSST: if you want a month's membership for just a quid, check out the end of this post), you get access to a whole range of classes, courses and activities across London. From yoga to pub crawls, cocktail workshops to chessboxing - trying something new has never been easier.

Thanks to the lovely lot over at Wonderush (seriously, such a fun team, I want them all to be my BFFs) I joined a group of excellent blogger types to have a little taste of what it's all about.

As well as some awesome activities, we also got to fill our faces with Sri Lankan street food courtesy of Kothu Kothu and IT WAS SO VERY GOOD. Seriously, it's some of the best street food I've experienced in London - so give 'em a follow on Twitter to find out where you can get some of their delicious goodness ASAP.

Here are five fun things Wonderush introduced us to - featuring varying levels of achievement but always full-on levels of enjoyment...

Salsa
Dancing isn't my usual forte. Unless you count Jagerbomb-fuelled delirum that I can 'get down' in the style of a Dad at a particularly bad wedding. And when it comes to salsa, it's usually on my Doritos rather than my workout schedule.

So I was pretty nervous about salsa - thankfully, I wasn't the only one and we all ended up getting involved and having fun, despite some having only just met each other.

I actually did manage to pick up the steps relatively quickly - although I'm pretty sure my attempts at being sexy with the moves just looked like I had a dodgy hip - but I had a really fun time nonetheless.

Life Drawing
When it comes to drawing, I am, quite frankly, pretty pants. It's just not my strong suit. Despite this fact, life drawing was ridiculously fun and something I'd totally recommend having a go at.

Okay, we weren't QUITE drawing full-on nudity - instead we had a stunning burlesque dancer who treated us to a bit of her routine before posing for our works of art. I find that people are one of the hardest things to draw, especially faces, so trying not to offend our lovely model with my drawings (You don't ACTUALLY look like that - it's not you, it's definitely me...) was top of the to do list.

As well as pencil drawings, we also got to work with charcoal, and had the opportunity to pass our pencil drawings round for the person next to us to finish. It was a lot more social than I'd have expected life drawing to be, and the whole session was really relaxed and enjoyable.

Learning the Ukelele
Little known fact about me: When I was younger, I actually spent about five years playing classical guitar. I was pretty good, like PASSING GRADES and everything. I stopped in my late teens and haven't really done anything musical since (except for pretending to be a DJ one time, and yowling some Katy Perry songs at bad karaoke nights many times).

Surprisingly, it all came back to me a bit when I was twiddling around on the uke, and I managed to get the chords and strumming patterns down pretty snippily. The ukelele was a bit tricky to keep a hold of (and according to Conor, probably just looked like a normal guitar on me. HA HA height joke) but having two less strings than a proper guitar means there's technically a third less to mess up. Right?

As a result of just a short session, I'm now able to play along with All About That Bass on an ACTUAL proper instrument. Definitely wanting to do more lessons with Wonderush thanks to this getting me back 'in tune' with my musical side.

Yoga
Unfortunately, I had to step out of bloggers Yoga (bloga??) pretty early on as I was (typically) dressed ridiculously unsuitably for the occasion. As much as I'd gotten pretty comfortable with my fellow bloggers and had decent pants on, I feel like my thinly-veiled-by-tights bum wasn't what everyone had come along to see.

Yoga is one of those things that I've always kinda wanted to do but mental images of willowy, super-toned fitness bunnies in yoga pants who can scratch their heads with their toes while doing a handstand has always made me a bit apprehensive.

Thankfully, this was quite a different situation. 'Social yoga' is less about doing your best contortionist impression and more about connecting with yourself and others around you. Even just 10 minutes did actually help to relax me. Totally something I can see myself doing properly in the future.

Once I've bought some sensible yoga pants, anyway.

Playground Games
For a final session, the wonderful Luce gave us a taster of the games sessions she runs as part of Antidote London.

Most of us in the room are - or are at least attempting to be - proper functioning adults - so why would childrens' games be relevant and useful in our coffee-and-smartphone-fueled lives? Quite simply, it's a great form of escapism - it encourages relaxation, can help improve your memory and confidence AND learn to be comfortable with yourself through that wonderful medium of silliness.

Thanks to my former tenure as a DRAMA STUDENT *flourish*, quite a few were familiar to me - including 'Anybody Who...', a great chair-swapping opportunity to get to know everyone else. We ended on the classic Grandmother's Footsteps. and finished off the day with a rather less-than-playground-friendly glass of wine.

I had an absolute blast of a day with the Wonderush gang and I'm so excited to use the site and try loads more new things over the coming weeks!

Some of the activities definitely took me out of my comfort zone and weren't things I'd normally consider trying out - but the day has definitely opened my eyes to trying new and quirky activities and quelled my curiosity into everything that's going on in the city. Netflix...I think we need to go on a break.

If you're sat at home/on your mobile/somewhere dull and suffering from major FOMO right now, Wonderush have kindly given me a discount code so you ace readers can get your first month for a MERE QUID. Yup, for a third of the price of those fancy coffees you grab every morning, you get a month of unlimited awesomeness. Just use the code ADVENTURE when you're signing up!

As you read this post, I'll be having a jolly time across the pond in Dublin. There'll be food in my belly, whisky in my hand and I'll have most definitely paid Penney's (what Primark is known as in Ireland) a lengthy visit.

Um, unless you don't catch up with this until Monday evening, slowcoach, in which case I'll probably be in bed having post-Guinness sleep catchups. Anyway, while I'm off having an ace time, here are some also-ace things from the week gone by.

THAT Lace Blouse
I featured this rather lovely white lace blouse from good old Primark in my Leather & Lace outfit post, and I'm happy to report that it ain't goin' nowhere. Because it looks amazing under, like, everything. Especially my beloved H&M polka dot skater dress that's totally made for spinning around in.

Fall. Out. Boy.
O.M.G. HOW good were they at Wembley? (asking as I'm pretty sure around 80% of my Twitter feed were there as well.)

For the first time ever (at a proper 'rock' gig at least), I was actually in the seating section. Not by choice and initially I was a bit gutted, but OH BOY were our seats amazing. I usually struggle being able to see, especially at packed out large venues, but I saw every single second in glorious relative closeness. Total convert to seating (as long as they're the same seats all the time. Can I buy them?)

Patrick and co. played an incredible setlist packed full of bangers - including I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy..., at which point I squealed QUITE A BIT. The crowds have definitely changed since the 'old days' (yep, I went there), but their performance and amazing songs have stayed completely and most definitely amazing.

Basically, I will see these boys forever. Until they go on hiatus again or stop closing with Saturday. Whichever.

Lethal Bizzle - Live Colourful
In quite the contrast to the gig I'd been to just two nights ago (well, not THAT much really. Professor Green supported FOB which was pretty odd), on Tuesday the lovely Lissa invited me along to LiveColourfulLive, a night hosted by Bulmers to celebrate the collaboration between Lethal Bizzle, electro-soul singer Sinead Harnett and legendary Bond composer David Arnold.

As well as sipping on Bulmers (the Black Cherry flavour is AMAZING fyi), we also saw Sinead and then Bizzle perform some tracks before the grand finale, the reveal of campaign track Come This Far. Despite being about as un-grimey-seeming as you can get, I think my pale emo kid shuffle managed to pass as just about acceptable.

Thanks to my dalliance with the wonders of Slimming World this year, I've actually got a bit better at incorporating good old veg into my diet. As long as that veg is chopped tomato, pepper or onion, at least. Which is why I spent last week taking part in a challenge set by AO.com, looking at different and more unusual ways of working veggies into daily meals. This year I've definitely branched out towards getting more kitchen-friendly, and I'm always up for adding new recipes to my limited but excellently executed arsenal.

The challenge set was to create vegetable-based meals for 6 out of 7 'main' meals during the week (although I did have to use one as a lunch recipe which is totally fine cause lunch is a mega important meal every day anyways). AO kindly sent me some veggies and recipes for the purpose of the challenge, and I kept a bit of a 'food diary' during the week with what I ate and what I thought. There weren't actually any recipes I'd tried before, and some ingredients I'd never experienced - I was definitely feeling the 'challenge' part with those ones.

BTW, if you're interested in re-creating any of these dishes, the recipe cards are all up on my blog Facebook page (*interesting-ways-to-use-a-blog-Facebook-page-other-than-just-posting-links-high-five*), and I'll hopefully be putting a few up individually here over the coming weeks. Because I'm nice like that.

Monday - Five-A-Day Tagine
With a few recipes that seemed slightly more daunting than others, I started off the week with something I knew I liked already. Well, when it's had meat in it, anyway.

Definitely one of my favourite meals of the week, it was really easy to make and had a lot of flavour. I'd actually had a packet of couscous hibernating in my cupboard that finally got used too! It also works out very cheap, as all you really need are the veg, some couscous (or jacket potatoes) and a tin of chopped tomates.

Tuesday - Spiced Root Vegetable Soup
Evening plans were afoot (a trip to the theatre, if you're curious!) so I actually made up the soup on the Monday night at the same time as the tagine, and took it into work for lunch the next two days.

I felt a bit like I was on a cooking show where they make all the courses at the same time and OH GOD I'M GOING TO MESS ONE OF THEM UP. But I pretty much didn't. Yay!

The soup probably came out thicker than I'm used to, but it was really tasty and warming. Plus, teamed with some cheapy rolls from the Co-Op, it gave me two days of not having to buy lunch at work. Moneysaving AND healthy. I can dig that.

(we'll forget about me stuffing my face with Big Mac meal after the theatre though, right? I had Sprite Zero, so it's totally okay)

Wednesday - Potato, Spinach and Leek Pie
Probably one of the biggest challenges of my week in veggieland was cooking for my very-much-a-carnivore boyfriend. The idea of vegetable-based meal was met by "but we can put some sausages in right?!". Thankfully, being told there was spinach involved sweetened the deal a bit. I am, quite obviously, dating Popeye.

The filo pastry didn't quite go to plan, apart from the rather nice crispy top layer, but the filling inside was AMAZING. I actually did a swapout for this one, as the recipe waas originally with mushrooms. Ick. So instead, we used leeks. This is another one I'll be putting the recipe up for, as it's super easy to make despite the thought of making a WHOLE PIE being quite scary to me.
I first had a mouthful of Pad Thai on a visit to Banana Tree in Angel back when I worked in the area, and it was love at first bite (ha). However, it's something I've never had the balls/inclination to actually cook up at home - but it was actually deceptively simple.

Although I think I messed up cooking the tofu a bit and I decided I wasn't really a fan if it, the dish overall tasted pretty good - especially the sweet chilli and lime sauce. Despite not having replicated the Pad Thai taste I'm used to, I'll definitely be making variations of this in the future as (tofu aside) it was a pretty tasty and filling meal.

Friday - Miso-Roasted Aubergine Steaks With Sweet Potato
Probably one I was pretty apprehensive about trying, as I've only ever tried miso in soup form and I pretty much hated it. I'd also actually never tried aubergine before. and was pretty intrigued to find out whether it'd float my boat.

Unfortunately, aubergine definitely isn't to my taste. I wasn't a fan at all of the texture and wasn't able to eat it - but the sweet potato fries did save the day. as they were ridiculously tasty. I LOVE SWEET POTATOES.

Sunday - Spiced Vegetable Biryani
I skipped out a day on Saturday thanks to my inability to resist BAD FOOD, plus being out all day and then at work in the evening, I had no time to actually cook. So on Sunday, I whizzed together the last meal of the weekend. And um...I was so hungry, I forgot to take a photo. WORST BLOGGER EVER.

However, I can report that the Spiced Vegetable Biryani was really tasty - and something I'd never have thought to cook myself. I ended up getting three portions out of it too, it definitely works as lunch just as well as dinner. Bonus.

Final thoughts?
The whole point of the challenge was to get thinking about veggies more - exploring new tastes and ways of using vegetables in everyday cooking - and I feel like it's been quite the success. I'll definitely be making another tagine in the near future, and the pie is definitely getting a repeat outing too. And although some recipes didn't work for me (soz, aubergine, we can't be friends), it was totally worth trying them out. I'm definitely more open to the idea of using more veg in different ways, and trying out new recipes and ways of cooking them.

Which of the recipes would you want to try out? What's your favourite veg to cook with?

Please all be upstanding (hypothetically at least, you don't actually have to get off the sofa/desk chair/bed just on my account) for my pretty amazing new Stormtrooper Vans. Yep, the nerd in me couldn't resist. Despite me actually only being a relatively casual Star Wars fan. They just look super ace, aight? And the box will make for awesome storage too.

I picked these snazzy babies up for just £15 in Tower London's sale. Like, seriously. £15 for a pair of Vans. I kid not. I actually bought some plain ones as well thanks to a sudden desire to own loads of skate shoes to wear with pretty dresses a la Lily Allen circa 2006. Except, I totally did it before she was doing it. They're super comfy too, which is particularly great news for when I'm running around work like a headless wookie. Which is most of the time.

Anyway, there are a couple of sizes of a few styles of Star Wars Vans and also some Disney ones too (for all you wannabe Princess Jasmines, you can pick some of those up for £16) over on the Tower London shoes website. I can't imagine they'll be there much longer, so get in while you can!Millyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09943463515742105850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507348424406729994.post-86637215201643900482015-10-12T15:15:00.000+01:002015-10-12T15:15:00.138+01:00Music & Fashion | Mallory Knox @ TOMS Unplugged

I like shoes. And I like music. Also high up on the like list is indulging in all things shoes and music related for a good cause. So paying a visit to the TOMS Community Outpost to see the quite awesome Mallory Knox play an acoustic set? Top notch Friday plans.

You've probably heard of TOMS shoes before - for every pair you buy, they'll provide a pair for a child in need somewhere in the world. And it doesn't just stop at shoes - they now offer a range of products which offer the chance to help deliver sight, fresh water and safe birth to those who need it most.

As well as being somewhere you can pick up a snazzy pair of TOMS shoes (I'm loving the on-trend metallics), the Carnaby Community Outpost also has a lovely cafe, with friendly staff and the cutest little super-Instagrammable lemonade bottles I ever did see. FYI, mega tasty too.

Coming on as support for Mallory Knox, I was introduced to Nations, who certainly have excellent spatial awareness skills. All four band members squeezed into the pretty small space to play some tracks from their debut EP. And they were rather good. Definitely recommending you give their track Never Too Late a go if you're one of these sensible people getting excited about the British rock scene these days.

Arriving fashionably (only slightly!) late to the party, Mikey and Sam from Mallory Knox took to the floor quickly and played some favourite tracks in a beautiful acoustic setting. With singalongs in the crowd (especially during super-catchy hit Lighthouse) and interaction from the guys, it was pretty much the perfect intimate afternoon of music.

After the guys had finished up, I took the chance to have a look around the shop itself, and managed to come away with a bit of a 'lust list' - including sparkles (I wish I'd had these when I injured my toe and went to a work Christmas do in a FABULOUS dress and...smelly old trainers), metallics, my beloved animal print and a severe urge to buy a backpack.
In a cafe, eating Rocky Road
This week, I finally stopped being rubbish and met up with the lovely Alexandra for a chat about all things food, life and London related. As it was easy to get to, she recommended Beany Green's Cafe in Broadgate Circus.

Perusing the cake stand as I always do, I was immediately drawn to the BLOODY ENORMOUS slabs of Rocky Road. Otherwise known as my favourite type of cake pretty much ever. Obviously, I had to have one. And it was AMAZING. It was so huge I couldn't even finish it, and ended up taking it back to my office to snack on during the rest of the afternoon!

At the theatre, trying something different
Usually when most people think of London theatre, they're thinking West End, flashy lights, big crowds and huge productions. But tucked away in Leicester Square Theatre, there's a little room called The Lounge, where shows take place on a MUCH smaller scale.

I went along to The Lounge on Tuesday, and while the masses rolled in to jump aboard for some Pam Ann LOLz, I headed downstairs to watch the Adam Morley Theatre Company's production of The Birds, based around the 1952 thriller by Daphne du Maurier. Yes, you're right. The girl with the bird phobia goes to see The Birds.

Thankfully, there wasn't an ACTUAL bird in sight (otherwise I'd have been in the bar fending off a panic attack with a large Pinot Grigio before you could say Alfred Hitchcock). Instead, three actors delivered their lines on a bare-bones floor area with minimal props, basic costumes and some recorded sound effects.

The acting wasn't always 100% on point, becoming perhaps too OTT for the size of the venue at times - but I did enjoy watching the story unfold and the characters develop throughout the tension-filled plotline. If you're willing to suspend your reliance on flashy production values and jazz hands, The Birds is a good gateway into the more off-mainstream side of London theatre.

On a boat, gawking at the view
Sometimes my job takes me to some pretty cool places - including chaperoning 300 students on a boat (LIKE LEO) for a party spent travelling along the Thames. With security and venue staff on hand, I grabbed some me-time to actually take in the night time views of London and it was pretty darn breathtaking.

I have now decided my ultimate life goal is to own a house facing out onto the Thames. London, you absolute night time babe.Millyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09943463515742105850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507348424406729994.post-25694282433478001132015-10-08T18:25:00.001+01:002015-10-08T18:25:56.790+01:00Tech | Six Super-Useful Apps for Londoners (and visitors!)

Other than Twitter and Instagram, obviously.

1 | Citymapper
Part TFL journey planner, part Google Maps, Citymapper works out the quickest way to make your journey using public transport, a bike or your own two feet (wearing skyscraper heels? Pick the first one. Trust me.). As well as just showing you HOW to get there, it also gives directions as you go like SatNav for your feet, and also connects with Uber to give an estimated journey time and price.

It actually took me a while in London to discover Citymapper but now I use it every time I have no clue where I’m going (which is a lot). I have my home and work locations set so I can click one button and it’ll send me to either AND gives me directions and information for the nearest train stations and bus stops.

So if I tell you I ‘got lost’ on the way to meet you, either my phone’s dead or I spent more time than necessary on my hair that morning…

2 | Zomato
Zomato is a pretty new discovery for me, but ever since I’ve been developing my foodie ways (aka EAT ALL THE THINGS) it’s been mega helpful in deciding where to eat. Recently, I downloaded their handy app too. If you’ve ever been out and about and decided to go for dinner, had no clue where to go and found yourself hopelessly googling ‘places to eat Oxford Circus’ the Zomato app will be a lifesaver.

As well as being a social community for food lovers to share their experiences, you can also search for restaurants near to you (or in a specific area), filtered by cuisine type, price and dietary requirements.

3 | YPlan
I first discovered YPlan when I got myself free credit and went to see Ghost Stories. By myself. Cause I ain’t afraid of no ghosts (apart from when I walked home down my quiet street after and a cat made me jump).

There’s so much COOL STUFF going on in London at times, it’s tough to know what’s quality and what’s going to bore your face off – which is where YPlan’s curated events come in. Handpicked by the YPlan team, they offer best price guarantees for some of the hottest events and experiences in London, aimed at spontaneous fun-hunters with loads to do today, tomorrow and this weekend – as well as further ahead too.

(BTW, if you want £5 credit, you can use my code MILLYYOUNG, and I’ll get a handy two quid when you book something. Ta in advance guys!)

4 | Frugl
If, like me, you’re forever trying to live the much-lauded champagne lifestyle on more of a Lambrini budget (the peach is actually kinda nice though), Frugl is totally your app.

Everything listed costs under £10 (not always including extra costs like drinks, etc) and there are loads of free events on there too. You can sort listings by price and type, with everything from fashion and free haircuts to film showings and classes and courses listed.

5 | Uber
Despite sometimes feeling guilty that I’m taking away trade from London’s black cabbies, Uber is a highly user-friendly way to get a relatively cheap taxi pretty much immediately in the city. Unless you’re unlucky enough to catch surge pricing, which totally sucks.

Before, I would never have used a cab in London. No matter how late, how tired or how much my feet felt like I was walking on burning coals from spending 12 hours working on my feet, it just wasn’t an affordable option. And despite the controversy surrounding trade taken away from London cabbies and fears over regulation of drivers, I’ve always had nothing great experiences using Uber.

Honestly? I do feel some guilt at taking trade from hard-working Londoners who offer a brilliant service in black cabs – but at the same time, I’m also a hard-working (faux) Londoner with not much cash to spare. So on the rare occasion I do get a taxi, I’ll use Uber.

(P.S if you want a free tenner – I get one too – my code’s ch1u5!)

6 | Drinki
Like drinks? Like FREE drinks? (of course you do). In return for a Facebook check-in, you can get yourself a free drink from loads of bars across the city. A great way to make your night a bit cheaper AND discover new watering holes in London (as well as Manchester and Liverpool, both places I thoroughly recommend for an ace night out).

Previously, the app was for women only which was a bit pants (especially if you’re out and about with a boyfriend or some male pals) – but it’s now been rebranded and updated so that anyone who uses Facebook and has the app can get their free drink too!

Wanna know one really awesome thing about being a blogger? It totally gives you a super-important excuse to go out and do more fun stuff with some of the fabulous people you meet through a shared hobby. Including food-based fun stuff. Trying out a new restaurant? It’s okay, it’s 'for the blog'!

Last week I visited not one, but two new-to-me restaurants, including meeting up with blogger babes Emma, Jasmin, Leanne, Katy, Viki and Natasha – a lovely mixture of bloggers I’d already met AND some new faces to get to know. Add that great company to amazing food and (of course) cocktails, and that makes for a pretty brilliant evening.

After meeting at Freud’s, a super cool underground bar with an amazing range of cocktails, we headed for Cabana - a Brasilian Barbecue restaurant near Covent Garden with fun and inviting décor and huge windows, where you could really feel the Friday-night-London city vibes as the sun went down around you. Our table was a booth-style affair, with quirky seating that looked like it was made from stitched together denim – so cool.

As poor Katy was having tube struggles (#Londonerproblems), we ordered up some cocktails to begin with – with a two for one deal before 7pm, it’d have been rude not to order two each, right? As they had to be two of the same, Viki and I did a swap so we each ended up with two different ones – a Classic Caipirinha and a ‘Carlos The Godfather’ featuring gin, elderflower and lime. Both were pretty strong (hooray) but still tasted amazing and refreshing.

I’ve never been the hugest advocate (avocado advocate - say that one five times fast) of guacamole – it’s just not been something that’s really been on my radar. To me, it's always just been that 'thing' that's chucked on top of nachos that isn't as good as salsa or sour cream. However, when Jas kindly ordered some with tortilla chips to share on the table, I discovered a bit of a new love. IT WAS AMAZING. I’d totally go back to Cabana even just for the cocktails and guac alone.

For the main courses, everyone else chose to go with a few of the smaller, street food type dishes, which I’d normally do. But in my RIDICULOUSLY HUNGRY state, I decided to go with a full main from the skewers menu, opting for the Guava-cue chicken – you guessed it, chicken in a BBQ guava marinade.

Upon arrival of our food to the table, it was time for the classic blogger moment, where no one actually started eating for a few minutes while we all snapped away (pretty much like this) – with a table of dishes wonderfully ‘art directed’ by Katy. Eventually, photos taken (and ready for Instagram), we got straight down to tucking in (and rare silence).

The portion sizes did feel a bit on the small side for what you paid for them – but taste was totally paramount. My chicken was fall-apart-in-your-mouth perfectly tender and the marinade was absolutely gorgeous - properly smoky and sticky, just how BBQ should be. The skewer came with a decently-sized portion of fries and a perfect homemade-tasting slaw.

Unfortunately, we were all a bit too full for dessert, but the options on the menu sounded INCREDIBLE. Chocolate Raindrop Doughnuts? Peanut Butter and Oreo Sundae? Definitely another solid reason to head back to Cabana in the near future.

I definitely felt the authentic Brasilian vibes through the cocktails and food, and the venue itself is perfectly suited to group dining. The staff were also really fun and friendly, making us feel really welcome. Hanging out with some of my favourite London bloggers at such a great place made for a totally awesome evening, and for friends, fun and food, Cabana is definitely a fantastic choice.

Recently, I’ve kinda sucked at staying positive about things. Yes, dear pop punk scene, I’ve definitely failed at being #posi. I beg forgiveness. I actually usually consider myself a pretty cheerful person – but for whatever reasons, recently life has felt a bit tough and it’s been a rough ride seeing the good in things at times.

Sometimes, I feel like I’m struggling so hard to be BETTER at everything that I don’t give myself the chance to see how great life can be. That's definitely something I think we all fall victim to at times, and when it happens, there are little things we do to try and get us out of that funk. So here it is – five nice, happy and simple things that have happened recently to make me smile when I temporarily forget how to.

1 | A now fully-functional laptop
If you read one of my recent outfit posts (and you should, because the outfit’s darn cute), you’d know that my laptop keyboard had decided to pretty much pack it in. I could still type awkwardly thanks to an old USB plug in one donated by my housemate with the words WRITE MORE Tippex-ed onto it, but it was awkward and annoying balancing it on top of my laptop so I could still use the mouse. I definitely didn’t end up writing more. BUT NOW I CAN!

It’s quite easy to take something like a laptop/computer/phone/general piece of technology for granted when you use it every day – having found it harder to write, blog and generally connect via my computer has probably been one of the causes of my negative feels. So here’s to keyboards, words, and how lucky I am to live in a privileged world where I’m able to actually do those abovementioned things.

2 | Flowers & Chocolate
I’m not allowed to say who bought me these as his manly-man image would be at stake, but they were ridiculously appreciated. A ‘cheer you up and well done gift’ that comes as good as this, and I’m a happy girl.

Even if said gift-giver did end up convincing me to share the chocs.

3 | Travel Plans
In my attempts to travel as much as humanly possible (and within my less-than-excessive budget) over the next few years, I’ve got not, one, not two, but THREE countries I’ll be visiting in the next two months. Okay, two are within the same trip, but it totally STILL COUNTS.
In less than two weeks (eee), I’m going to Dublin – where we’ll be touring the Guinness Factory, taking in a literary pub tour (literature AND pubs? SOLD.) and even venturing out of the city. Then, in November, we’re off to Amsterdam and Bruges on a weekend coach trip. Totally worth sitting on a coach for, right?

Considering I don’t have much spare cash at the moment (thanks to...er, other travel plans), I’ve managed to blag both of them quite a bit – Conor paid for the Dublin flights for a Christmas present (last year) and we’re staying with his family; and Amsterdam/Bruges is actually costing nothing thanks to my job and a travel company we partner with. So all I actually need is spends for both trips! Yay, bargain travelling indeed.

4 | Freshly Painted Nails
Seriously, this is like, the SMALLEST thing but something that always helps me feel closer to ‘me’ again. During pretty much the entire past two super-hectic weeks, I’ve actually had the same polish on – only whizzing over it in the middle. So by the end of the week, it was chipped so much I had to try and style it out as ‘textured’. Today, I'm going to sit down, watch Scream Queens and coat my nails in my current favourite, Barry M's Chilli, and even have time for a top coat. World, I'm ready.

5 | Growing out my awful fringe
You know that urge you get to change your hair every couple of months? Mine comes in the form of cutting in a full fringe. Especially around winter, or when I'm fed up of eyebrow maintenance, I decide just to snip away and end up with a (usually self-cut due to an impulsive nature) blunt, full fringe.

Initially, I'm like QUICK I LOOK FAB and take loads of selfies, but within three days, I'm hating it. I know some of you feel my pain. But, yesterday I washed my hair and finally managed to style it into a side fringe. All is right with my head again - on an external level, at least. And internally? I think it's getting there.

London's Ice Bar is somewhere that's always been on my bucket list of places to go but never quite got around to. In case you've never heard of it - imagine a bar where pretty much everything (walls, bar, glasses) is made out of pure ice.

Seeing snaps of friends curled up in huge ponchos with smiles and drinks was definitely giving me some FOMO on something that seemed incredibly unique. Thankfully, I somehow managed to get invited down to their press evening for the launch of their new design. And it's AMAZING.

The Ice Bar changes its theme every year in September, and for 15/16's look, the bar is embracing London's diverse musical legacy by dubbing it 'Icebar London Rocks'. Definitely a style I can get behind. Designed by scupltor Jens Thoms Ivarrson (known for Chanel's ice catwalk, FYI), it celebrates the bar's 10th year as the UK's only permanent ice bar. Pretty cool, right? (It took me a whole two paragraphs to drop a pun. Actually quite proud.)

Arriving at the event (late, I totally blame my lovely other half, obviously), we sheepishly snuck into the back and managed to not miss an ice carving demonstration by the artist himself, followed by wine and canapes - including the most incredible chorizo roll. Seriously amazing - and they do have a full restaurant too!

Obviously, the big draw of the evening was the Ice Bar area itself - and it totally didn't disappoint. The first thing I noticed entering the bar was the HUGE skull scuplture next to the bar area itself - and you can actually climb inside and peer out from the eyes!

At the bar, we were served champagne in glasses actually made from ice (which is where the gloves attached to the poncho definitely make sense) - you can also order yourself a drink from a range of tasty rock-inspired cocktails.

I was so impressed with the level of detail that went into the designs - from the tattooed 'rock chick' on the wall to the bar decorated with punky studs - and one of the feature pieces and a total photo opportunity was the Throne of Rock. The blue and purple lighting was wonderfully atmospheric and really emphasised the ice as the light caught and reflected around the room.

I did have to pop out for a little bit during the visit to warm up (I'm a ridiculously temperature-sensitive person!), but the temperature in the Ice Bar is definitely easily manageable for the 40 minute time slot you get and you warm up super quickly afterwards (especially if you pop on a 'wine jacket').

Standard entry to the Ice Bar includes one cocktail and cape/gloves hire for a 40 minute session, and costs from £13.50 to £16.50. It's a great little place to stop off at for a totally unique drinking experience and definitely one worth pulling some friends together for and trying out!

What do you think of the new design? Would you go along for a cocktail (or three)?

1 | Krusty Shake Cross Body Bag, Skinnydip London, £32
When I spotted SkinnyDip London's Simpsons collab blogged by the likes of Sophie and Lissa's Instagrams and blogs, I fell a little bit in love. Despite my usual run to the comfort of dark colours in the winter, it's such a fun collection. Entirely based around Krusty (totally one of the most iconic characters besides the Simpsons themselves right?), their soda cup bag is bright, fun and eye-catching. And glittery, of course.

2 | Oasis Victoriana Dress, House of Fraser, £55
The whole Victoriana trend is making one of its regular comebacks for AW15 and the goth aficionado in me, as usual, couldn't be happier. A statement but still casual black dress is such an easy thing to wear on a day-to-day basis, and this beautiful, wonderful one from Oasis caught my eye when browsing House of Fraser's (enormous) collection of dresses. Everything about it is basically LOVE - the sleeves! The floaty skirt! The peasant-goth detailing. Basically, I need this dress.

3 | Arrow Ring, Bloody Mary Metal, £45
So, if anyone's stuck for what to get me for Christmas, HELLO. I've lusted over Bloody Mary Metal since I first heard about them earlier this year, and its the Arrow Ring that's still top of my wishlist. Probably one of their most iconic products, it's understandable why - super cute and really unique.

4 | Gold Stag Beetle A4 Notebook, Ohh Deer x Urban Outfitters, £6
Working in a University, October means one big thing: new term ahoy. With a new term comes lots of new things, and obviously this means I'm obligated to treat myself to a fabulous new notebook for all my amazing ideas and things to do. I reckon it's scientific fact that my productivity is improved tenfold when I've got nice stationery to be productive with, and a notebook like this would do just the job.

5 | Lipstick - 'Boardroom', Topshop, £8
I don't spend much time in boardrooms and I have no idea whether this shade would suit me, realistically - but it's just really rather nice-looking and nothing like anything else I own - which can be a rarity when it comes to lip shades. Topshop lipsticks have served me well, and I reckon it's time I picked up a few new ones - Boardroom being top of the hit list.

6 | Lace Up Brogues, George @ ASDA, £14
I spotted these babies when I went along to George's Christmas press day (see: Instagram shot) and they just sum up everything that's right in the world of footwear for me. Still not sure how I'll style them yet, but I'm thinking with my feet on this one.

Shirt and dress, George @ ASDA

This is probably going to be a super short post as I'm actually minorly screwed at the moment laptop-wise (more to come in the next paragraph and also FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS). But, anyway, I wore this outfit the other day for one of my 13 hour work days and I just enjoyed it too much to share. I normally actually hate wearing shirts unless they're underneath something, at which point I morph into a shirt advocate of the highest order. Blame the coverage of boob-gape, maybe? Anyway, this magic mix of polka dots and pinafore-esque dress is a major fave of mine right now. Perfect for a mixture of adult, work-friendly sass but still with plenty of youthful adorableness added.

On another note and probably what this post is about REALLY, forgive me if my blogging might be slightly sporadic of late. Firstly, my laptop keyboard has completely broken and I'm currently sitting with a USB keyboard balanced precariously on top of it. The other day I sat backwards and nearly took my bottom teeth out. It's okay though, because writing still wins, but it makes it much more awkward to write big posts without getting wrist cramp. Secondly, I'm on (temporary and not scary) medication that will make my life a lot better in the long run, but has side effects. Said (temporary and only a bit scary) side effects may often include making me have phases of hating everything especially myself and preferring to throw a pair of tweezers (the ones that won't seem to grab THAT unruly eyebrow hair) at my laptop than actually WRITE using it. On the plus side though, I'm having ridiculously vivid dreams that involve parties and a starring role in Castle. Give me a month and a fixed keyboard, and I'll be back to my usual fabulous self. But hopefully still having super-realistic dreams about being Nathan Fillion's BFF.

Basically, throwing a magical special thanks out to people who actually read this shit and keep coming back. You're the coolest (and I'd owe you all a beer if I could afford it). Also, I suck at 'short posts'.Millyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09943463515742105850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507348424406729994.post-88851766234145052472015-09-27T15:30:00.000+01:002015-09-30T13:21:36.536+01:00Adventures | The One Where Milly Goes To FriendsFest

Ever heard of that little-known TV show about six mates in New York that was kinda popular as we were growing up? Y'know, Friends? If you're a fan, you might have also heard about something taking place in London in recent weeks called FriendsFest - basically, a 21st anniversary celebration of all things Friends! Tickets sold out ridiculously quickly but one of my ace pals managed to snap up some tickets, so we went along last weekend to see what all the fuss was about.

After waiting in a short and perfectly manageable queue, we were given wristbands and wandered into the beginning of the tour, where walls were adorned with iconic snapshots from Friends episodes. We had the chance to sit in Joey and Chandler style La-Z-Boy chairs, and to see actual real life props from the show, including Joey's wedding speech, a VHS (yep) copy of Buffay The Vampire Layer and loads more. Unlike the replicas , these were firmly tucked away in glass cases. And if you ever dreamed of sitting in Central Perk sipping a latte, FriendsFest took you about as close as you'll probably get with it's 'Central Perk' cafe corner. Maybe the 'sponsored by Lidl' paper cups and disappointing lack of Gunther took away some of the magic, we helped ourselves to a free drink and numerous amounts of biscuits.

Although everyone was free to wander back and forth through the venue, the 'final' step of the tour and probably the most exciting was the chance to explore a replica of Monica's apartment - pretty cool, eh? There was a bit of a wait to get onto the set as only a certain amount of people were allowed on at a time, but instead of a boring queue, Comedy Central provided seats, a poll of your favourite Friends moments and fun trivia cards - that we were even allowed to take home with us!

The replica set itself was ridiculously cool. Something that was done so well with the whole exhibition was how hands-on everything was - from sitting on the sofa for a picture, to actually being able to open the fridge and find THAT meat trifle and Ross' sandwich! The level of detail that went into it was so impressive with so many 'hidden' treats - including voicemail on the phone you could listen to and a box of toy dinosaurs tucked under a table. Even though it was a replica, I genuinely almost felt like I was walking round the actual apartment set from the moment we walked through the (iconic) door.

I didn't have time to go there as I had to head up the road to work (yep, on a Saturday!), but they also had an area where you could get your hair styled in a classic 'Rachel' do. We did, however, have time to pop outside and recreate THAT umbrella sequence, probably one of the best-known TV show intros in history! Although I'd probably only call myself quite a casual Friends viewer (despite having seen pretty much every episode), I genuinely got so excited by the whole thing. Perhaps I didn't appreciate it as much at the time, but now moving into adulthood I can see why Friends was (and still is, despite the landlines and lack of Instagram) such an important show. Even though the show aired when a lot of us were rocking onesies over a decade before they became a fashion trend, the themes in the show are still ridiculously relatable. And let's face it - who didn't imagine their grown up life to basically be just like Rachel's? (spoiler: it probably won't be)

What also really got me about the day was the amazing value that you got for a low ticket price. Seriously, in a city where you pay a premium for a lot of 'experiences', the fact that the tickets cost a fiver and included free cloakroom, drinks and biscuits was AMAZING. Nothing except the merch came at any extra cost. And the organisers let people take their own photos too, not charging £8 for a 'professional' snap like many attractions - they even had staff in place to take your pics for you. As someone who works in events myself, it really did wow me that Comedy Central managed to have so much on offer for such a low ticket price. It just goes to show - you don't have to shell out a fortune to do something fun sometimes. I really hope this is something the capital (and the country as a whole) gets on board with more - as everyone who went, including myself, seemed to have an amazing time.Millyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09943463515742105850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507348424406729994.post-28531448576282258532015-09-24T20:05:00.000+01:002015-09-30T13:21:48.510+01:00Style | Leather & Lace

Dress - Forever 21* // Blouse, Primark* // Bag, River Island*

Ever thought about where your style sense comes from? Looked back at old pictures and cringed a little at what you used to wear? Back when I was around 13/14, I discovered alternative rock music - and it became a big part of my life. Okay, so Avril Lavigne wasn't exactly edgy by anyone's terms, but at the time when most of my life had been dominated by the Spice Girls, her grungy style was incredibly cool and enviable. So off I went to TammyGIRL (yep) to get myself some baggy jeans and 'cheeky' slogan tees. I basically thought I was one of the coolest kids in school (apart from the untouchable, rebellious goths).

As I got a bit older, I ended up being swept up in the Myspace craze - and envying the 'Myspace famous' alt queen types. My style definitely swayed more towards the 'scene girl' look - think chunky plastic pearls, excessive fringe and footless tights. I remember buying impossibly high heels for my 18th birthday, which I'd taken off after the three minute walk from pub to club; ogling the Hell Bunny dresses and Iron Fist shoes in the local alt clothing shop; the skintight punk-patterned PVC dress with a fully zipped front; bleaching my hair blonde and dying the ends pink, only to go back to black again weeks later. From the age of about 16-19, this was pretty much my 'look', and a lot of it stayed with me into the early years of Uni.

As I went through Uni and into 'real life', I definitely toned down the look a lot - buying into floral dresses, peter pan collars and actually buying some 'adult' friendly clothes. Blazers. Sensible, smart shoes. But I still feel like a big influence on my style still comes from alternative subculture, even if it's presented in a much more 'mainstream' way. When I hit Forever 21 in Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in Stratford, it was this leather dress that completely caught my attention. All-over leather can be insanely tricky to pull off, but the flattering fit allows it to look more casual than 'sexy' (and definitely worlds away from skintight PVC). Even from the early days, lace has been a favourite for me, and this blouse from Primark makes the perfect contrast with the 'tough' feel of the leather. And to add colour, I picked up an adorable purple mini satchel from River Island.

This outfit is probably one of the most 'me' things I've ever picked out - comfy, easy to wear, and great for both daytime and night time. As well as the clothes, I also picked up some Swarzkopf Real Red hair dye to touch up my roots and give the red a boost. And I feel like it really works with the outfit too! I actually spent about three hours wandering around Westfield, including picking up some dinner at Spud-U-Like. Normally, I tend to avoid large shopping areas but I found heading there in the evening gave me plenty of time and space to browse with relatively small crowds and limited stress, which was fantastic. Westfield Stratford City is definitely the perfect place to go if you're having a real shopping afternoon/evening, with so many stores to choose from - you're definitely sure to find something that suits your own individual style!

Now we're a good way into September and firmly into Autumn, I feel like it's a good time to share my summer highlights - because it was a pretty amazing one. Despite being a victim of crime when I had my phone snatched, there have been a lot more highs than lows over the summer. I've pretty much fully settled into my new job (although there's still plenty to learn), managed to keep my weight at a place I'm pretty much happy with, and overall I just feel really positively about life. I have my down days, for sure, but for the most part, I feel like I'm in a good place right now. There's been a lot of fun times in the past couple of months, and here are some of them (links to blog posts included, in case you missed 'em).

Festival Fever
This year I was incredibly lucky to be able to attend four weekend festivals - as well as my annual trip to Download, I also found myself taking a walk down memory lane at Reading - somewhere I hadn't been for quite a while. I also experienced some new-to-me smaller festivals, in the form of 2000Trees and Hevy. As well as seeing some great bands, I also caught up with amazing people, as well as meeting tons of new ones. For me, festivals are about more than just music - and the experiences I've had in 2015 have been some of the best so far. I'm already thinking about where I'll be heading next year (hoping to make Groezrock my first ever Euro fest) - festival season is one of my favourite times of the year. Despite my complaints about camping...
Picnics and BBQs
What's summer without the annual seasonal munch-fest of picnics and BBQs? One of my favourite food-related days of the season was when I headed to Regent's Park for a fancy picnic - proper wicker basket and all. A world away from the grassy expanse of park, I also enjoyed a picnic in the heart of busy London, gazing up at Tower Bridge from The Lawn at The Tower Hotel. My house also hosted our first BBQ. Despite struggling with the actual BBQ, emergency shopping trips and suffering hideously from gallstones later that night, it was really fun to have everyone round and have a drink. Pretty sure the amount of Pimms consumed this summer excelled all previous years too.

Days Exploring
I managed to squeeze in some pretty cool things over the summer, usually with Conor in tow, and took advantage of the slightly limited good weather as much as possible. Our trip to London Zoo was definitely a high point - we actually planned to go last summer but never got around to it. I absolutely love doing 'touristy' things in my own city - and riding around with afternoon tea on the BB Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus was a wonderful chance to see London from a new perspective. And shovel scones in my mouth, obviously. I feel like doing fun and exciting things, particularly this summer, has really helped influence the way I see my blog - rather than just pushing products and outfits, I want to inspire people to do, see and experience more of life. Hopefully I can carry on making the most of as much as I can, sharing it with my small but wonderful audience - and maybe even inspire some of you guys to do the same.

Multi-use palettes, when done well, are SUCH a useful thing to have. Whether it's for de-bulking your day-to-day makeup bag or going on travel adventures, having all the shades you need in one place gets a huge thumbs up from me. Unfortunately, in a lot of these palettes, I tend to find there are shades that I have no interest in and rarely find one where I'll be using everything. But I think my search might just have stopped thanks to theBalm.

Known for their quirky packaging, theBalm offer quality products that look super cute when you whip it out on the tube too. The In theBalm of Your Hand palette* is a collection of some of theBalm's best-loved products, and also includes a flip up mirror (and a decent sized one at that) so you can use it on the go.

For eyes, there are four shades to choose from - and all four are the kind of slightly grungy shades I tend to gravitate towards. Insane Jane is a metallic silver, Mischievious Marissa a golden bronze, Sexy a warm brown and Lead Zeppelin a gunmetal-based dark khaki. The latter is from the Balm Jovi palette, which I've been itching to get my hands on for it's rock and roll style and gorgeous shades. The pigmentation of all four is fantastic, they're really blendable for creating bright and bold looks. The lighter shades are a perfect base to use with Sexy, and you can create anything from a golden daytime look to a full on smoky eye, with just four shades.

One thing I really like about the cream blush and lip section is the seperate lid - if you've ever had the experience of getting powder makeup in the lip parts of your multi-use palette, you'll understand what a small but super-nifty feature this is! The lip shade is a classic red, easy to apply with your fingers to make an instant bright red lip.

With regards to cheek products, theBalm of Your Hand has some great shades to choose from. Instain Argyle is a light baby pink, great for daytime wear, or if you want to make more of a statement going out, Cabanaboy creates a deeper pink flush - and I also really like it used as an eye shade too. The product that theBalm are perhaps best known for is their highlighter, the Mary-Lou Manizer. I've reviewed it here, but it's great to have a tiny version of the product included in this to get the full face theBalm look!

I'm so impressed with the variety of products in the palette - the only shade I'd probably use slightly less is Hot Mama as it's a bit too shimmery for my personal tastes - I probably would've switched it out for an extra eye shade! However, the eye and lip colours are perfect and could easily see me through a weekend away, and the sturdy packaging is a fantastic plus point too.

The In theBalm of Your Hand Palette will be available from Debenhams from October - the perfect Christmas present!

Are you a fan of theBalm?

Over the weekend, I was invited to possibly one of the most exciting things I've done on this blog to date. Thanks to Leisure Cookers, I headed along to a cooking event with Dan Doherty, Executive Chef at London's infamous Duck & Waffle. Insane. The location for the day was a stunning, farmhouse-style kitchen setup in Shoreditch, a million miles away from the bustle of the nearby high street and a perfect location to showcase Leisure Cooker's stunning range cookers. Severe kitchen envy.

With a champagne reception (in the daytime!!), the Leisure Cookers team took me through their new selection of range cookers, perfect for . I don't even have a kitchen to renovate, but if I did, I'd be all over one of their Cookmasters - a modern twist that I've already slotted in to the Pinterest kitchen of my dreams. Afterwards, we moved through to the kitchen to see Dan cook up a storm (there's a link to recipes at the end of the post!) with the help of a range cooker - and with us as the taste testers...

The first meal Dan addressed was a very important one - breakfast. And his recipe was actually just a simple twist on a student-favourite classic, beans on toast. Except these beans were seriously but simply spiced up, with the addition of some chipotle chilli and bacon. The toast is also replaced - with a freshly baked cheddar brioche roll. The beans were amazing - and as long as you remember to put the dried beans in to soak the night before, it's a perfect quick and easy dish to cook up with a hangover.

If you've got up a bit late for breakfast but lunch still isn't in sight, it's the perfect time for Instagram's favourite meal - brunch. Dan's brunch of choice for the day was a Salt Beef and Sweet Potato Hash with Corn, Avocado, Hot Sauce and Fried Eggs. AND IT WAS AMAZING. To be honest, brunch isn't something I've particularly embraced - even though London's 'brunch scene' is very much on the up. But Dan's dish definitely changed my view on what's brunchable - including the discovery that avocados, something I'd never normally think to cook with, go really well with the dish. The crispy corn was also a great contrast to the softness of the beef and sweet potatoes. One of Dan's tips was to invest in a great set of pans - making cooking much easier.

The final meal for us all to try was a Pomegranate Molasses & Harissa Glazed Chicken and Spiced Roasted Root Veg with a Chickpea 'Bread' Sauce. A bit fancier than my usual Sunday lunch down the pub! Pomegranate seemed like a weird thing to glaze chicken with, but discovering the molasses sauce was a bit of a revelation - so sweet that it's almost sour, it tinges the chicken skin with another layer of taste that works really well with the meal as a whole. Range cookers are the perfect match for making a big dinner, keeping all the parts of the meal warm until you need them - also a way to avoid spending a dinner party slaving away in the kitchen.

Watching Dan cook and trying out his dishes was an absolute joy. One of the main pieces of advice I picked up is that the best things to have are good equipment and fresh ingredients in order to cook up top restaurant-quality dishes. Dan's genuine and infectious passion for cooking definitely inspired me to get creative with classic dishes - and also the ambition to one day own a beautiful Leisure range cooker! And if you've been inspired too, you can find all of Dan's recipes from the day here.

Last Friday was Conor's birthday, and to celebrate, we spent Saturday night at The Kingsley Hotel in Holborn. Part of the Thistle Hotels group, I actually won the stay from my post on the BB Bakery Afternoon Tea Bus Tour that I took part in, thanks to Thistle and Joe Blogs. Despite living less than an hour away in the same city, the idea of a London hotel stay always excites me - it's the chance to spend a night away from my normal surroundings, to feel a bit pampered and luxurious. And believe me, we definitely got that...

I've won a few hotel stays in the past, so I was expecting a normal room but when I arrived first at The Kingsley, I was informed we were actually staying in one of their eleven junior suites. Yup, not just a room - a suite!! The entrance to the hotel immediately set my sights high, with plush interiors, luxurious baulstrades and high ceilings in the foyer.

Stepping into the room, I actually took a bit of a breath - not far off the size of some London studio flats I've seen, I wanted to stay there forever. With one side of the room a living area featuring a sofa and TV, and the other a bedroom area with a huge king size bed, the room had tons of space that made me wish we were spending more than a night there! There were two TVs in the room, one in front of the sofa and one in the sleeping area, meaning we could (and did) watch telly both sat down and in bed. And because I'm a lovely girlfriend, I even let Conor watch Match of the Day (which I did fall asleep during, though...). As if the fantastic, well-decorated space and huge comfy bed wasn't enough, the bathroom was genuinely the size of my living room at home - and included a bath AND seperate shower cubicle!

The staff at the hotel were absolutely incredible, helpful and friendly and really going as far as they could to offer amazing customer service. As well as leaving a handwritten card and branded chocolates in the room, upon arrival, I was casually chatting with the receptionist and mentioned we were celebrating a birthday. Twenty minutes later, there was a knock at the door - the concierge arrived with a piece of chocolate cake, drizzled with a berry compote, plate adorned with 'Happy Birthday', and two glasses of champagne. The fact that we hadn't even mentioned the birthday before our stay shows just how willing the staff are to offer amazing customer service - and the cake was absolutely delicious!

The hotel has such a great setting - right in the centre of tons of restaurants, shops and not far from the West End. We popped out for dinner around the corner, but didn't actually want to leave the suite much as it was just too amazing to not spend nearly all our time there. In the morning, we headed down to the restaurant as our stay also included breakfast (another thing I wasn't expecting!) and had a super tasty full fry up at the buffet bar. After heading back to our room and watching some Jeremy Kyle (hey, most of our stay was very classy...) we waited until 12 noon on the dot to check out in order to get as much time there as possible. There were lots of lovely touches to the room too - from the water on the table and ice bucket to the impossibly cosy Thistle robes nestled away in the wardrobe - I pretty much spent the entire stay in mine!

Our stay at The Kingsley was absolutely lovely - normally, we wouldn't be able to afford such luxurious hotel surroundings but for a special occasion, it was lovely to have such a luxurious time. However, if you're out and about in the city and you book to stay here, a word of warning - you definitely won't want to leave your room!

(L-R) Chilli, Cocoa, Mustard, Paprika, Crush

I love Autumn. Don't get me wrong, summer's great and all and offers the wonderful opportunity to eat ice cream on a daily basis, but I do look forward to cosy scarves, hot chocolates and not having to worry about feet being sandal-friendly. YAY. Plus, Autumn colours are some of my favourites - particularly when it comes to nails. As I like to keep my nails pretty short, dark shades tend to work well - so Autumn colour palettes are totally up my street. Here are five of my favourites from the wonderful Barry M!

The first four of the polishes come from the Gelly Hi-Shine range, which I love and own rather a lot of! My favourite of all the five shades above is definitely Chilli - a dark red shade that nicely bridges the gap between summer brights and wintery shades. I've been wearing it for the past week or so now, and I'm also impressed at its staying power - I've only experienced minimal chipping between reapplying it.

Cocoa is a pretty self-explanatory brown shade - considering I don't wear brown, I'm surprised at how much I like it. Chocolate nails! If you're after something a bit less traditionally autumnal, Mustard is, as you'd expect, a mustard yellow that keeps a little bit of sunshine in your life. And Paprika is a burnt browny-red shade, reminiscent of piles of leaves that'll soon be appearing all over the floor.

The only non Gelly Hi-Shine shade in the bunch is the Barry M Matte Nail Paint in Crush. I have to say, matte textured nails took me a while to get used to but I actually really like them now - it's a bit different from the usual hi-shine glossiness and the shade is an absolutely stunning maroon.

Barry M are pretty much unbeatable on the high street when it comes to quality and value - each polish comes in at a purse-friendly £3.99, and either Boots or Superdrug usually have a 3 for 2 offer going on, meaning you can snap up three for a mere six quid. They apply really well, dry relatively quickly and have excellent staying power - so if you're looking to stock up on autumn nail shades, definitely check these ones out!

What shades will be on your nails this autumn?

I rather like food. And I rather like music. Therefore, The Pianoworks in Farringdon is a place highly relevant to my interests. Thanks to Sarah at The Prosecco Diaries (for a fab competition) and also The Human League (for being my winning song suggestion), I got to experience a meal and some cocktails there - and it was definitely a fun one.

Situated in a cool underground space just up the road from Farringdon station, The Pianoworks takes the good old 'knees up round the piano' to new heights, with in-house pianists (and, if you're lucky, a full band as the night goes on) to accompany their food and drinks. Just, don't get those knees up TOO high, unless you like your food flying and your drinks dripping down your face. Health and safety, people. Anyway, the best part is yet to come - for a modest tip, you can write any song you like on a napkin and the super talented keymasters will have a go at it for you. We decided to give them a bit of a challenge, and requested Metallica's Enter Sandman. And they ACTUALLY DID IT. NIGHT MADE (unfortunately we left before finding out whether they'd also be able to master TLC's No Scrubs).

The Pianoworks Menu is pretty simple - Filled Rolls or Not, with a selection of steaks and patties either served in between some bread (filled rolls), or with salad (or not). I went for the prawn 'or Not' roll in my endeavour to branch out with my restaurant food choices, and really enjoyed it. The consistency was great - solid enough to stay together on the plate, but fell apart perfectly in my mouth. Worked really well with the spicy BBQ sauce too.

Unfortunately, the dressing really wasn't to my taste at all so I was unable to eat the salad - very citrus-based, for me it just didn't work with the salad. On another visit, I'll probably be opting for the roll-based option instead. However, the paprika salted chips were really tasty to make up for it - who needs healthy sides anyway?

Although we balked at the cost of a couple of gins (£10.80 each for a double is probably run of the mill for some central London drinkers, but we're stingy/regularly skint), generally most prices are reasonable if you're looking to spend a bit more on a night out that's a bit special and different. Even if you're not eating, it'd make a great evening out for an unusual first date or a group of friends who love a singalong. I'd definitely head back for another visit - but next time? I'll be requesting Slayer...

*I received a complimentary meal and cocktails for two as a competition winner, with no expectation of review.

London Edge is primarily a trade show, where alternative fashion brands from all over the world come together and showcase their collections to buyers from all over the country (and beyond!). However, as a blogger, it's also a great opportunity to scope out new collections and new brands - including drooling over plenty of pieces. Seriously, waiting for my bank balance to take a beating now. Despite feeling a bit rubbish and tired, I took a little trip on Sunday afternoon, and here be some of my favourite finds....

Among the many, many brands showcasing their wares, I stumbled across blogger fave Motel. I've previously featured their Topi Daisy Print Dress in an outfit post, and always lust over their new collections. At London Edge, they were showcasing their new collection, a collaboration with tattoo artist Grace Neutral, who particularly specialises in hand poke tattooing. Featuring a stunning intricate design motif and monochrome colours, it's definitely a collection to keep an eye out for! As well as the Motel x Grace Neutral collection, they also had their November and December collections on display - as to be expected, lots of sequins and gorgeous textures to be had!

Killstar are a dark and intriguing fashion brand that I really like - although they lean much more towards the gothic side of the style spectrum, I love their monochrome prints and interesting accessories. They have a lot of pieces that really inspire me to shake up my usual look a bit, outfits that I could defintiely see myself wearing to gigs and festivals.

If pinup, rockabilly style's your thing, Dolly & Dotty's beautiful range of dresses will make you completely fall in love. Fun and quirky prints and wonderful vintage shapes - their designs are perfect to add a retro-inspired, girly piece to any wardrobe.

As I was wandering around the stalls, this vest totally caught my eye - and it turns out that Social Decay, the Brooklyn-based brand behind it, have loads more of them too, great for an easy casual look with a pair of jeans or high waisted shorts. And they're also extra lovely as they even gave me some stickers. I bloody love stickers. Check 'em out!

My final stop-off was the super ace Collectif stand, where they were showcasing one of their brands - Bright and Beautiful. Inspired by the 60s and 70s, there were loads of fun prints and classic shapes on show, given a modern twist. LOVE.

During my visit, I also popped in to a talk by the wonderful ReeRee Rockette, on brand/blogger collaborations. It's a subject that's often talked about in Twitter chats and blog post, but ReeRee's approach was refreshing, honest and informative. I was particularly interested in her advice on approaching brands with innovative and interesting pitches - offering more than just a review, but actually creative ways to incorporate products and brands into posts.

I also found her thoughts on 'alternative' brands working with more 'mainstream' bloggers very interesting. Although my style is definitely somewhat influenced by the brands that cater to the rock, punk, etc scenes, I wouldn't say my dress sense is particularly extremeley 'alternative' (the days of PVC skintight dresses have long since passed me by). But you don't have to define yourself as a goth/punk/whatever to appreciate a lot of the pieces on show, which is an aspect I really loved about the variety of collections on display. Incorporating the kinds of brands on show during London Edge into your own personal style is something that's actually very easy to do - so take the time to seek out smaller brands, take it one piece at a time, and you might just stumble across something a little bit amazing...

I really enjoyed putting together my August Playlist and got an awesome response from it, so I decided I'd try and make this a proper monthly thing. Yep, I spoil you with excellent stuff to listen to, I know. It's quite a mixed bag this month, from heavy riffs to party beats, hopefully you'll find something you like in this month's picks!

The Wonder Years - A Song For Patsy Cline
The Wonder Years are a band that really bring out quite an emotional reaction in me - from Soupy's vocals to their amazing songwriting, I've been excited about the new album No Closer To Heaven for a while and it's totally not let me down. MUCH LOVE.

Marmozets - Born Young And Free
The first time I listened to Marmozets on record, I wasn't particularly blown away. But after their awesome performance at Reading Festival, I decided to give them another listen and I'm so glad I did. Fronted by the effortlessly fabulous Becca Macintyre, her vocals in particular provide a refreshing new take on female-fronted rock.

Beartooth - The Lines
Putting agressive, punchy verses together with soaring singalong choruses, I mentioned Beartooth as a standout in my Reading review and if you like your heavy stuff, they're one of the brightest prospects in the rock scene right now.

Fort Hope - Sick
Still on a theme of bands I saw at Reading, I also checked out Fort Hope. Made up of former members of My Passion, I totally can't get enough of their catchy pop-infused rock vibes right now. Plus, during their Reading set, they actually invited a fan on stage to perform with them - so they're pretty nice lads too.

Years & Years - King
A bit of a curveball for my normal rock-based tastes, but I'm actually really enjoying the much-hyped but very deserving Years & Years right now. With Balearic beats and silky smooth vocals, their songs make you almost forget you're in rainy Britain and not on a sun-drenched holiday.

Jim Adkins - Hell
Some of you might know, I'm quite the Jimmy Eat World fan - and this month, I saw him live at Union Chapel and it was AWESOME. Jim's solo stuff is totally up my street and not as wholly acoustic-led as I'd initially expected - especially the jangly guitar and bouncy melodies of Hell.

Neck Deep - Serpents
Neck Deep are slaying it at the moment, leading the way for British pop punk for sure. Slightly more evolved from their usual straight-up punk sound, with verses that reminds me somewhat of my favourite 00s emo tracks, Serpents is one of my top picks from their recent banger-filled album Life's Not Out To Get You

As with August, I'll likely be adding to this playlist as I find more tunes to fall in love with this month - but please do send me some recommendations of what you've been listening to lately too!

Recently I was invited down to the OMNIYA Health and Beauty Mediclinic in Knightsbridge (yeah, fancy!), to try out their new Skinceuticals Repair, Restore Hydrate facial. After successfully dodging a park teeming with pigeons (go me), I arrived at the clinic to a lovely warm welcome from facialist Debbie and the clinic team. OMNIYA is pretty unique in the sense that it's not just simply a beauty clinic - they also have a team of medical practitioners including wellness experts, a GP and nutritionist, as well as a dispensing pharmacy and retail space selling cult and niche top-of-the-range skincare brands. Pretty impressive eh?

The Skinceuticals facials was developed specifically by OMNIYA for the launch of their AOX Lip Complex. After having a nice relaxing lie down in the cosy and comfortable treatment room, Debbie got to work cleansing my skin, getting rid of the day's makeup and any dirt and grime that might have been lingering about. After exfoliation with a gentle but effective micro polish type cream, it was time to peel. Peels can sound a bit scary, but honestly, I've found them to be so good for restoring my skin's health. This one smelt a bit strange, almost vinegar-like but not as strong - but it didn't feel at all uncomfortable and definitely contributed to how good my skin felt after the treatment, and made it appear brighter and firmer. It tingled slightly, but didn't sting and the tingling just felt like proof it was working its magic.

After removing the peel, Debbie bought out the nowhere-near-as-scary-as-it-looks light therapy machine pictured above, and I spent ten minutes under the lamp chilling out and enjoying having some time to relax. I've experienced light therapy before, and actually really enjoy the way it feels - it's designed to heal skin right down to its deepest layers. Finally, my skin was cleansed again and moisturising and AOX Lip Complex treatments were applied. The Lip Complex made a really noticeable difference in the long term condition of my often-dry lips. And the Skinceuticals facial as a whole definitely helped with dullness of my skin - in the days that followed, I definitely noticed my face looked brighter and felt smoother. I also found the treatment itself ridiculously relaxing - seriously, did not want to leave. Debbie was also fantastic - she made me feel very at ease, and her knowledge and experience in the world of skincare is severely impressive - I picked up a lot of tips just from an hour with her!

Not gonna lie - this is a pricey one. At £250 (aka just under half my month's rent, eep), it's not something I'd pay for myself to be honest. But if luxury facial treatments are your thing and you have that kind of money to spend, it's definitely a very enjoyable experience and my skin definitely felt better for it, so I'd say it's certanly worthwhile if you can afford it. However, OMNIYA do offer a variety of facial treatments that start at £65, so there are definitely other affordable options for those on a budget.Millyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09943463515742105850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6507348424406729994.post-56496615407933221412015-09-03T17:01:00.000+01:002015-09-30T13:23:42.195+01:00Food | Fine Dining on a Budget: Little Bay, Farringdon

I was on a tube after a night at the theatre with the wonderful Rebecca when she recommended Little Bay restaurant to me. Nothing quite gets my attention like a) tasty food and b) tasty food that doesn't cost too much, so hearing that they offer a three course meal for FOURTEEN QUID coloured me incredibly intrigued. I went for a birthday meal there a couple of weeks later and was instantly hooked - and recently headed back again for round two.

Little Bay have a few restaurants spread across London, and the Farringdon branch is a pretty unassuming little place just up the road from the station. Don't be fooled by the size of the entrance though, as inside and downstairs, there's plenty of seating for bargain-hunting diners. The decor has a sumptuous, European feel to it - lots of red paint and beautifully adorned walls. For your £13.95, you get to choose a starter, main and dessert from their set menu - with plenty of choice, whatever you're into.

There are actually quite a few starters on the menu that feature things I'm not that big a fan of (mushrooms. crab. ick) but I don't even consider anything except the Grilled Goat's Cheese. IT'S AMAZING. Served on a muffin with salad and roast peppers in dressing, I could genuinely eat this every day. Back when I went for my birthday earlier this year, I had the Lamb Steak. It was really good - but the Roast Salmon Fillet completely blows it out of the water. Served with rice, tabbouleh salad and Hollandaise sauce, not only does it look like a face on the plate, but it's packed with amazingly complimentary and exciting flavours. Usually, I wouldn't opt for salmon that often at a restaurant, but I'm rather glad I decided to have a vague attempt at healthiness as I've found potentially one of my favourite restaurant dishes!

For dessert, both of us had the Baked Bavarian Orange Cheesecake which was insanely lush. For the price, Little Bay offers amazing value - our meal for two with drinks came to under £40, which is insanely good for that quality and amount of food in Central London. It's genuinely become one of my favourite places to eat out in the city - for budget-conscious foodies, it's a must.

Ever since I discovered GHDs and Schwarzkopf as a teenager, my hair has pretty much never been back to its 'natural' state. Although I'm lucky to have a pretty thick mane, like many in a similar boat, the idea of being able to reverse the damage of all the years of abuse I'd given it is a very appealing one. I'd never actually heard of OLAPLEX before as it's brand new to the UK, but the concept sounded very exciting to me - billed as a luxury treatment that repairs hair from the inside out, it's been hailed as 'groundbreaking'. As the first salon in the UK to get hold of the OLAPLEX treatment, Billi Currie was the perfect place to experience it - and I felt very safe in the experienced hands of Head of Colour Tom Smith.

OLAPLEX is a unique in-salon treatment that, in a nutshell, works from the inside out to restore strength to your hair. It's not a conditioning treatment (although it does make hair more receptive towards conditioning treatments) - OLAPLEX actually works with the molecular structure of hair and can be used as a standalone treatment or during the process of colouring hair. The first step is the OLAPLEX Bond Multiplier, featuring a single ingredient (bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, for the science bods out there - try saying that one after a bottle of plonk). As I was just having the treatment, Tom applied the Bond Multiplier in a diluted format, which was left on my hair for 2-3 minutes.

The second part of the treatment is the OLAPLEX Bond Perfector, a cream version of the liquid used in the first step, to further strengthen the hair's bonds and restore condition. This was left on for around 10 minutes, during which I got to experience the wonderful hospitality of the Billi Currie salon - a great cup of tea with complimentary biscuits and the chance to catch up on Lily Allen's love life with the latest issue of Grazia. Ten minutes and a fantastic hairwash and scalp massage later, I found myself back upstairs having a fantastic blow dry - and got to experience the results of the treatment.

As you can see from the before and after shots, my hair looks a lot healthier - it's boosted and evened out the colour and added tons of shine. The major thing, though, is something you can't see through a laptop screen - my hair FEELS amazing. It actually feels like I have totally virgin, untreated hair - and as someone who's been dyeing, straightening and blowdrying since my teens, it's a pretty amazing feeling. The whole process took just over half an hour - which means it's an ideal option for a quick fix for your hair. The treatment by itself at Billi Currie costs £50* (including a blow dry), which is less than I was expecting for a high-end salon, and actually rather impressive considering the long-lasting results. Tom also gave me the third step to take away - The Hair Perfector, applied once a week before shampooing, and so far after two weeks my hair still has a lovely, fresh and renewed feel to it.

Would you give OLAPLEX a try?
